Huebner & Wang (2011) conducted a simulation study to compare EAP, MLE and MAP estimation. They found that ``overall conditions that applying the MLE/MAP method of classification resulted in higher numbers of examinees classified correctly on all K skills, whereas the EAP method of classification resulted in higher total skills classified correctly and fewer severe misclassifications’’ (p. 417).

A limitation of their study is that they used the true item parameters to estimate person classifications, but in practice the true item parameters are unlikely to be known in advance.
